Cards
You can finde all the cards on the following site: cards
-
Setup
- Shuffle the deck thoroughly.
- Starting at your right hand neighbor and continuing counter clockwise, give everyone at least 5 cards. Don't give all cards at once, for better distribution make more then one round.
- Once distributed give everyone a second to count their cards and order them.
- Put the rest of the cards face down on the table, this is the draw pile. Take the top card and put it face up next to the card pile, this is the start of the discard pile.
- As soon as the discard pile is set up the game begins.
- It's the turn of the player on the right hand side of the one who distributed the cards. The game is played in counter clockwise direction.
-
Turn
Normal Turn
- Place a car which either matches in color or value (type) to the one already on the discard pile.
- If you have no card that matches, draw a card from the draw pile. If the drawn card can be placed on the discard pile, place it otherwise it's the turn of the next person.
- As soon as you place down a card on the discard pile it's the turn of the next person.
- If this was your second to last card you have to say "mau" and if it was your last card "mau-mau". If you miss saying "mau", the next person has not drawn or placed down a card and someone points it out, then you have to draw 2 cards.
- When the draw pile becomes small, all but the top card from the discard pile can be shuffled and placed under the draw pile. This is best done by someone who has already won or is otherwise currently not playing.
Special Rules
- If you have a card that matches and it's your turn to play you have to play the card. You are not allowed to not play a card because you don't want to.
- If you have a card that matches in color and value you can put it on the discard pile even if it's not your turn. The game continues from you in the same direction as before, skipping everyone between you and the previous player.
- Following the previous rule also allows placing down multiple of the same color. Make sure that it's at least visible that you placed down multiple cards at once, even better pull the cards one by one from your hand..
- You are allowed to throw in a card (which matches in color and value) while some one is still drawing cards. The person that was drawing cards has to finish their draw but the additional plus cards will go to who ever is next continuing from the one throwing in.
- If you say "uno" instead of mau you have to draw 2 cards.
- You can not be targeted by plus cards once you laid down all your cards and said "mau-mau".
- Placing a Change Direction card while only two people are playing works the same way as a Skip card.
-
Goal
The goal of the game is to have no more cards in your hand by placing all of them on the discard pile.
-
Game End
- As soon as you place down your last card and say "mau-mau" you have "won".
- Once the second to last player has "won" the game is over.
-
Next Game
Once the game has ended a new one can be started. It's the turn of the next person counter clockwise from the one who previously handed out the cards to shuffle the deck and start a new round.
